Nium was founded in 2014 by Prajit Nanu and Michael Bermingham, initially launching as the consumer remittance platform Instarem before rebranding to its current name in 2019.

Nium's licenses span major financial hubs, including a Major Payment Institution license from Singapore's MAS, FCA authorization in the UK, an Australian Financial Services License, registrations with FINTRAC in Canada and AUSTRAC in Australia, an Electronic Money Issuer license in Brazil, and money transmitter licenses across the majority of US states, among others. Yes. Nium's investors include Vertex, BOND, Visa, New View Capital, and Temasek.
On the partnership side, Nium works with Visa and Mastercard as card network partners, Thredd and Fiserv for card issuance, SWIFT and RippleNet for payment connectivity and settlement, Circle as a payout partner within the Circle Payments Network, iPiD for account validation and fraud prevention, and MOIN for regional payout coverage in Asia-Pacific.
