The Challenge

Weel built Australia's fastest-growing spend management platform by giving SMEs Visa-backed digital cards and a single platform to control spend, manage receipts, and sync with accounting software. But that platform was built for Australia: bill and reimbursement payments only reached recipients domestically, with no way to pay internationally, convert currencies, or hold multi-currency balances.

Customers expanding internationally ran into the usual walls. High FX fees, limited merchant acceptance, and little visibility into where their money actually went. As customers like Canva and Eucalyptus pushed into global trade, that domestic ceiling became the thing standing between Weel and its next stage of growth.

The Solution

Weel partnered with Nium as its preferred financial services provider, alongside Visa, to build global payments directly into its existing platform, with no new account or workflow required. Nium's licensing across more than 40 markets, paired with Visa's acceptance in over 200, gives Weel a faster path to launch in new countries instead of building licensing market by market.

Customers can send bill and reimbursement payments globally and in real time depending on destination, convert currencies at competitive FX rates, and hold balances in multi-currency wallets. Visa Business Debit Cards issue instantly and are accepted at merchants worldwide, tap-and-go, with detailed transaction reporting and real-time tracking built in, and physical cards following in the coming months.

This partnership with Nium is an important milestone for Weel, enabling us grow in alignment with our customer needs. It means we can now deliver even more value to our customers, helping them navigate the complexities of spend management effortlessly.”

The Results

Building on Nium has let Weel deliver:

  • Global reach: licensing across 40+ markets (Nium) and acceptance across 200+ markets (Visa) replace a domestic-only payment model.
  • Real-time, multi-currency payments: customers convert currencies and hold multi-currency wallet balances instead of routing everything through AUD.
  • Lower cost, more visibility: competitive FX rates plus detailed transaction reporting and real-time tracking cut the fees and blind spots that come with international spend.
  • Instant card issuance: Visa Business Debit Cards issue digitally on the spot, tap-and-go and merchant-accepted worldwide, with physical cards rolling out next.
  • Scale built-in: the partnership extends a platform already processing more than $500 million a year for SMEs, including customers like Canva and Eucalyptus.
Our collaboration with Weel underscores our commitment to empowering global platforms through best-in-class payment infrastructure.”
